Kevin Pietersen Challenges Gambhir on KL Rahul’s Role, Snubs Harshit Rana from India’s Champions Trophy XI
As Team India gears up for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, former England captain Kevin Pietersen has sparked debate with his comments on India’s batting order. Addressing India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, Pietersen strongly advocated for keeping KL Rahul at No. 5 in the playing XI, dismissing any experiment with his position.
Pietersen’s remarks come in response to Gambhir’s preference for a left-right middle-order combination, which has left Rahul’s batting position uncertain. The Indian management had already faced criticism during the recent ODI series against England, where Axar Patel was promoted to No. 5 ahead of Rahul in the first two matches. While Axar capitalized on the opportunity, Rahul struggled at No. 6, scoring just 12 runs in two innings.
However, Rahul bounced back in the final ODI in Ahmedabad, scoring 40 off 29 balls, contributing to India’s 142-run victory. Following the match, Pietersen, speaking on Star Sports, issued a clear message to Gambhir:
“One thing they’ll be happy about is that Virat Kohli got runs today. So Rohit’s got runs. Gill, Shreyas… it’s a pretty formidable start, I tell you that. I want KL Rahul at No. 5 because I want him to face more balls. He came in today with 17 overs to go. And when you come in with more time, you can build your innings. I don’t think KL Rahul is the guy that comes in with three overs to go and hits 30 off 12 balls. Rahul needs time in one-day cricket. The best way to give him that time is to bat him at No. 5.”
Kevin Pietersen’s India XI for Champions Trophy
Apart from backing KL Rahul for No. 5, Pietersen also revealed his preferred Indian XI for the Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20.
His selections notably excluded young pacer Harshit Rana, instead backing Arshdeep Singh as the second frontline seamer alongside Mohammed Shami. He also favored Kuldeep Yadav over Varun Chakravarthy as the primary specialist spinner.
Explaining his choices, Pietersen stated:
“Chakravarthy has been very good, but I think Kuldeep has been outstanding in terms of what he’s produced and the numbers he’s delivered. I also like having a left-arm seamer, which is why Arshdeep starts for me. You’ve got your three seamers there—Shami, Arshdeep, and Hardik. Then you’ve got Jadeja, who’s always my first pick, along with Kuldeep and Axar.”
Kevin Pietersen’s India XI for Champions Trophy 2025:
- Rohit Sharma
- Shubman Gill
- Virat Kohli
- Shreyas Iyer
- KL Rahul
- Axar Patel
- Hardik Pandya
- Arshdeep Singh
- Mohammed Shami
- Kuldeep Yadav
- Ravindra Jadeja
The Debate Continues: Will Gambhir Agree?
With Gambhir hinting at a fluid middle-order approach, it remains to be seen whether he sticks to his left-right combination strategy or takes Pietersen’s advice to solidify Rahul’s spot at No. 5. Meanwhile, the exclusion of Harshit Rana from Pietersen’s XI has also raised questions, as the young pacer has been making a strong case for selection.
Is Rahul’s Position Secure?
While Pietersen has made a strong case for KL Rahul to bat at No. 5, Gambhir’s tactical approach suggests flexibility could be key for India’s success in the tournament. Rahul’s ability to play both aggressive and anchoring roles makes him a valuable asset, but his struggles at No. 6 against England exposed some weaknesses. Gambhir might opt to rotate the batting order depending on match situations and opposition bowling attacks.
Another consideration is Axar Patel’s growing batting contributions. If Gambhir persists with his left-right combination strategy, we could see Axar promoted again, possibly pushing Rahul to No. 6 or a floating role. This would challenge Pietersen’s belief that Rahul must bat at No. 5 to be most effective.
Harshit Rana’s Snub: A Justified Decision?
The omission of Harshit Rana from Pietersen’s XI has raised some eyebrows. The young pacer has impressed in domestic circuits and IPL performances, making a strong case for inclusion in the squad. However, Pietersen’s decision to back Arshdeep Singh instead suggests he values left-arm variety in the seam attack.
Arshdeep’s ability to swing the ball early and deliver effective death overs has made him a reliable choice in limited-overs cricket. Given Hardik Pandya’s all-rounder role, Shami’s experience, and Arshdeep’s left-arm variation, Pietersen seems to believe that Harshit Rana doesn’t yet fit into the XI.
India’s Bowling Attack: Balance Between Experience and Form
Pietersen’s choice of Kuldeep Yadav over Varun Chakravarthy also adds an interesting dimension to India’s bowling lineup. Kuldeep’s resurgence in white-ball cricket has been remarkable, and his ability to take wickets in the middle overs is highly valued.
With Jadeja and Axar providing all-round depth, Pietersen has gone for a more balanced spin attack. However, Chakravarthy’s mystery spin has troubled batters in the past, and depending on pitch conditions, he could still be a contender for selection.
Tactical Battles Ahead
With India set to face Bangladesh in their opening match, all eyes will be on Gambhir’s final XI. Will he align with Pietersen’s suggestions, or will he stick to his own tactical flexibility?
- Will Rahul remain at No. 5, or will Gambhir prioritize left-right flexibility?
- Is Harshit Rana’s omission fair, or does he deserve a spot over Arshdeep Singh?
- Will Kuldeep Yadav justify his place over Varun Chakravarthy?
As the Champions Trophy draws closer, expect more debates and tactical discussions surrounding India’s final playing XI. One thing is for sure—every decision made will be scrutinized under the highest expectations as India aims to lift the coveted trophy once again.
